The ability to direct is one of the most fundamental skills a photographer can have. Whether it’s guiding a couple, setting up a product shot, or composing any other scene, proper direction makes all the difference.
Before deciding to enter the wedding photography market, I had to gain a lot of experience—not just to refine my skills but also to build my confidence. But how does one develop this ability? Through practice, time, and inspiration. It’s essential to have references and learn from the best. In wedding photography, my biggest inspirations are Sabrina Vasconcelos from Rio de Janeiro and the world-renowned photographer José Villa.
This skill is a journey, a process of growth. One must understand personal limits but also be willing to push boundaries. Concept, freedom, confidence, and self-acceptance are key elements. It’s about knowing who you are and recognizing your own potential.
Direction is crucial not just on the wedding day but also during pre-wedding shoots. These sessions are one of the best ways to develop the art of guiding couples. If you can confidently direct a couple in a pre-wedding shoot, you can handle any other situation. It all comes down to analysis, observation, and refining your artistic vision.
No one becomes a master photographer overnight—just as no doctor is born knowing everything. Every skill is learned, and growth is a continuous journey. That’s why it’s important not to let criticism bring you down. Instead, embrace it as part of your evolution. Progress is always forward, step by step, with every experience.
